25th AMPT 2024 CONFERENCE, ISTANBUL

The 25th Advances in Materials and Processing Technologies (AMPT) Conference was held from October 30 to November 3, 2024, hosted by the Turkish-Japanese Science and Technology University (TJU) and Maltepe University in Istanbul, Turkey. This year’s event took place on the Maltepe University campus, welcoming 150 international delegates from academic and industrial institutions worldwide to exchange insights into the advancement of engineering and technology.

The conference was primarily organized by Dr. Saleem Hashmi of Dublin City University and Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sahin, Vice-Rector of TJU, with Prof. Dr. Bekir Sami Yıbaş, Rector of TJU, and Prof. Dr. Edibe Sözen, Rector of Maltepe University, serving as advisors. Maltepe University’s administrative team managed all logistical aspects, ensuring a smooth and enriching experience for participants. Special acknowledgment goes to Prof. Dr. Sözen for the gracious provision of conference facilities, facilitating an international forum where experts from regions spanning from Poland to Panama and Malaysia to the United States could collaborate.

Key discussions centered on recent developments in advanced materials, including superalloys, ceramics, carbon filament composites, and high-entropy alloys, each with wide applications in aerospace, automotive, and medical prosthetics due to their lightweight, strength, and durability. Papers and presentations highlighted innovations from around the globe, particularly advancements in materials and manufacturing processes using robotics and artificial intelligence.

The plenary session addressed innovations in surface design, with a strong focus on green processing technologies and environmentally friendly production. Noteworthy presentations included insights into biocompatible materials, like bacteria-infused self-healing concrete, and discussions on biodegradable packaging solutions aimed at reducing pollution. Additionally, advancements in using organic and biodegradable materials in manufacturing were explored, including challenges posed by processing such materials.

An important tradition of the AMPT Conferences is the recognition of exceptional contributions to advanced materials and manufacturing through the Professor Johnson Gold Medal. For 2024, the medal was awarded to:

 - Mr. Yetkin Karakaş, CEO and Chairman of Armelsan, for his notable achievements in 2024,
 - Prof. Dr. Adnan Memic, Professor of Biomaterials Chemistry at King Abdulaziz University, for his lifetime contributions to scientific advancement, and
 - Prof. Dr. Bekir Sami Yılbaş, Rector of TJU, for his pioneering work in laser processing and surface engineering.

Lastly, the AMPT Steering Committee reviewed proposals for the next conference venue and has selected Bucharest, Romania, as the host city for AMPT 2025. This event marked another milestone in AMPT’s tradition of fostering collaboration and innovation in materials science and processing technologies, setting the stage for continued advancements in these critical fields.
