STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
TJU will focus its efforts on differentiating itself as a top-notch world-class higher education institution with its research and graduate studies perspective, top talent faculty, and staff members, and excellent research infrastructure in six major key areas identified by the Council as described in Section III. Two of the prioritized interdisciplinary areas will be the focus in the first four years and then expanding into the remaining four areas gradually to cover all the targeted priority areas while paying attention to global academic issues, valuing and benefiting from diverse Turkish and Japanese cultures, and aiming at a digital university and ‘Campus for Society 5.0 ’.
World Class Research and Graduate Studies Orientation
An integral part of the priorities for TJU involves building institutes and research center-based organizations with a high graduate student ratio. Exponential growth in research output via graduate research and education is targeted over the years. Additionally, TJU will offer a research-rich environment that offers many practicing opportunities. Students and faculty will learn and teach by integrating research into curricula and programs.
Developing Talented Research Leaders
TJU will attract and select top talent faculty and staff members with specialized search and transparent and well-structured selection methods with continuous and extensive academic scouting to locate gifted and talented candidates early-on in their education or career. TJU will also offer globally competitive compensation and benefit packages alongside a research startup grant for the incoming faculty to attract and maintain top talent. International compatibility and leadership are to be achieved in various aspects such as admissions policy for students, researchers, faculty members, academic calendar and degree equivalencies, while considering conformity and harmony with the Higher Education systems of Türkiye and Japan when serves the purpose of high-quality research and education.
Building Excellent Research Infrastructure
TJU's world-class research infrastructure will support a modern approach to scientific knowledge creation, with the goal of "being at the frontiers of knowledge for meaningful change and breakthroughs" via research that leads to scientific and technological advances. In essence, TJU emphasizes knowledge making at the edge, adapting to dynamic paradigm shifts where disciplines end up breaking or joining. Further, such research is to be supported through high-end research facilities as well as frontier science focused Ph.D. programs.
Encouraging Turkish and Japanese Culture
By establishing a frontier knowledge-seeking environment, TJU will exemplify collaboration and symbiosis between Turkish and Japanese cultures. To this end, on campus Turkish-Japanese cultural center will be established. Further, alongside the English academic instruction, an opportunity to learn advanced Turkish and/or Japanese languages is to be provided to all TJU members.
Establishing Digital University
TJU’s main outlook is built around the idea of a “properly-digital university including strong remote research and education connectivity, operating facilities, equipment, and spaces”. In this respect, TJU will adopt a digital research and education approach with simulated, interactive, and immersive modalities with advanced Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality solutions. Students and faculty can work and learn in a cyber-physical immersive experience using Metaverse. Other digital university features for TJU cab be its data-driven university labs with remote access, courses with digital pedagogy and content, and a smart research management support system. However essential hands on and in class training cannot be abandoned and will always play an important role in highlighting the campus characteristic of TJU.
Developing Campus for Society 5.0
One of TJU’s motto is “Research and Learning Everywhere and All the Time”. In this respect, TJU’s differentiation strategy includes various campus features like technology enabled rooms, smart facilities that are available all around the campus with buildings and labs, campus integration with Technopark Istanbul and nearby Sabiha Gökçen airport, and a living campus to address the challenges of a researcher-centered design for Society 5.0. This design will include “learning-everywhere spaces', green structural arrangement of all facilities, eco-friendly mobility on campus. Additionally, the campus is going to be special-needs friendly and supply inclusive, distributed, and decentralized with its services, classes, and laboratories. Designing and maintaining a green campus with; sustainable CO2-free energy supply and zero energy waste strategies will play central roles in achieving the learning and researching all the time and everywhere motto.
